There are multiple components of the DSM system that need to be managed and monitored. To facilitate this, DSM comes with a set of administrative tools that allow you to perform common administrative tasks.
Administrative Utilities in the DSM Client Application
The administrative utilities of the DSM client application are available in the Administration menu to users logged into the client as the Administrator. Using the administrative utilities, you may create users and user groups, customize database structures, set up forms, add Global Finds, define automatic notifications, configure media profiles, and enable helper applications.
To perform these tasks, you must be logged in to the DSM client as the Administrator. The Administrator user is predefined in the system and cannot be deleted. The Administrator password was defined when the database was initially created.
In order to connect to the Application Server, the client application must be properly configured. For detailed instructions on how to configure the client application, refer to the “Logging In” section of this guide.
The MetaCommunications Management Console
The MetaCommunications Management Console is an instance of the Microsoft Management Console (also referred as MMC) configured to display the snap-ins most commonly used when administering various aspects of the DSM system.
The MetaCommunications Management Console may be launched from the Programs-> MetaCommunications folder of the Windows Start menu.
The MetaCommunications Management Console includes the following snap-in groups:
MetaCommunications Services—the root for all MetaCommunications snap-ins including the File System Service and the MetaData Service snap-ins that are used to manage InterSync services (refer to “Managing and Monitoring the InterSync Services”) and the Database Monitoring and Management snap-in used to monitor the InterSync services and perform basic administrative tasks on DSM databases (refer to “Managing DSM Databases and Monitoring Processes”). During the InterSync installation, the MetaCommunications Management Console may be configured to accommodate any combination of these snap-ins in “MetaCommunications Services”. Additionally, the Database Monitoring and Management snap-in is included in the Application Server installation. Refer to the DSM Installation Guide for the corresponding installation instructions.
Services—lists the services installed on your computer and allows you to start, stop, pause/resume, and restart services and to configure general service properties.
Shared Folders—displays the computer’s shared folders, current sessions, and open files.
Computer Management—provides access to a variety of Windows management utilities.
Event Viewer—displays event logs. All error and information messages from the program modules that make up the DSM system (e.g. from InterSync services) will be displayed in the Application logs portion of the Event Viewer.
The Application Server Shell provides a user interface to interact with the Application Server and perform the following operations:
DSM databases related: managing (starting up/shutting down) and configuring database links.
Client applications related: managing user sessions, disconnecting users, setting up automated upgrade.
Miscellaneous: starting/stopping the Application Server, configuring communication ports and licenses.
For the further discussion on the Application Server Shell, refer to “Managing the Application Server”.
