Attaching Databases to the Database Monitoring and Maintenance Snap-in

Each database that you would like to monitor using the Database Monitoring and Maintenance snap-in should be “attached” to the console using the Database Properties dialog window.

Attaching a DSM database involves specifying the location of the computer running the Microsoft SQL Server, the name of the DSM database, and the user name and password that the Database Monitoring and Maintenance snap-in should use when logging into the Microsoft SQL Server in order to access the database.

To attach a DSM database to the Database Monitoring and Maintenance snap-in:

  1. In the tree portion of the MetaCommunications Management Console, locate and expand the Database Monitoring and Maintenance snap-in under the MetaCommunications Services group. Right-click the Databases icon and select Attach Database from the popup menu. This will open a new Database Properties dialog window.

TIP: You may also attach a database by clicking the Databases icon and selecting Attach Database from the Actions menu or clicking the Attach Database button located on the tool bar.

  1. Type the location of the computer running Microsoft SQL Server in the SQL Server location field of the window, or leave the field blank if SQL Server is running on the same computer as the InterSync service you are configuring. The location may be entered as a computer name (e.g. <ComputerName>, “(local”), or as an IP address. To attach an MSDE database, type the database server location as: “<ComputerName>\metacomm”. You may also click to browse for the computer.

Note: MSDE is installed on your SQL Server computer as a named instance of the Microsoft SQL Server. You must refer to it as: “<ComputerName>\metacomm”. For more information on the MSDE installation, refer to the DSM Installation Guide.

  1. Type the name of the DSM database you would like to attach in the Database name field.
  2. Type the user name and password of the SQL Server login that the snap-in should use when logging into SQL Server.
  3. If you would like to test whether the snap-in is able to connect to the DSM database using the SQL Server location, database name, user name, and password you have provided, click Test connection. The service will display an alert message indicating whether the test was successful. If the database connection test fails, repeat steps 2-5.
  4. Click OK. This will attach the database to the snap-in and display the database host and name in the Databases listing. When you click OK, the snap-in performs the database connection test described in step 5.

Note: The name of each attached database is preceded with the SQL Server location name. Particularly:
“<ComputerName>” is used to refer to the remote MSSQL Server computer;
“(local)” is used to refer to the local computer hosting the MSSQL Server;
“<ComputerName>\metacomm” is used to refer to the MetaCommunications MSDE instance of MSSQL regardless of the computer location.

At this point, the DSM database(s) that you would like to monitor have been attached to the Database Monitoring and Maintenance snap-in.

To delete an attached database:

  1. Right-click the desired database and select Delete from the popup menu.
