Managing Located Files

Managing Located Files

Common file management tasks can be easily handled within DSM. This includes archiving, retrieving, moving, and copying files.

Archiving

Archiving is the process by which files are moved from a production environment to an archive storage location. As production files are archived, two things happen: First, the status of the files changes from “Production” to “Archive.” Second, the files are segmented according to the size constraints of the offline media that will eventually be used for permanent storage (typically offline media). By automatically segmenting files as they are archived, they can be immediately copied to offline media, thus alleviating the tedious process of manually segmenting files to fit the offline storage media used in your environment.

Retrieving

Retrieving a file is the process by which files are copied from offline or unavailable storage back to the production environment. When files are retrieved, InterSync automatically catalogs and classifies them, ensuring that all users can immediately locate, access, and manage recently retrieved files with DSM.

Moving

DSM offers easy and efficient tools for moving managed files to any destination within the enterprise. By using DSM to move files, database records stay up to date, ensuring that all users retain the ability to locate, access, and manage files regardless of when they were moved or where they were moved to.

Copying

When DSM is used to copy files, they are duplicated and placed in the destination of your choice. If this destination is a location monitored by DSM, the files are automatically cataloged and become instantly available for all users to locate, access, and manage.
