Introducing the DSM Database

The internal structure of the DSM database is used to store records of various types used for production and configuration purposes by the components of the DSM system. For example, InterSync retrieves its configuration settings from the database records designed for this purpose.

In their turn, all major operations, such as archiving, retrieving, searching, and cataloging, require interaction with the following database folder type records:

Digital Resources—stores information on digital resources (files/folders) either located in the production directories or moved to the archive location. By default, the digital resource records contain file metadata (e.g. the file/folder name, location, creation time, etc.), thumbnails, and extended previews.

Retrieval Requests—stores information specific to retrieval requests (e.g. the retrieval request number, retrieval request date, etc.).

Database records are comprised of database fields. Each database field is used to store a single portion of information. In DSM, the predefined structure (set of database fields) exists for all types of database records. However, being highly customizable, the DSM system provides the possibility to extend the default structure of the Digital Resources and Retrieval Requests folder type records. Additional database fields may be created to accommodate as much information (metadata) as needed to meet the needs of your users and workflows. For details on how to create custom fields, refer to the “Defining Additional Database Fields” section.
